"Butane Honey Oil Lab Explosion
On Sunday, February 22, 2015, at approximately 1:41 PM, the Palm Springs Police and Fire Departments responded to a structure fire at the Knights Inn, located at 1450 South Palm Canyon Drive. Emergency personnel arrived on scene, saw smoke exiting from one of the rooms, and determined that there had been an explosion within the room.
PSPD Personnel contacted the four subjects who had been in the room at the time of the explosion, in the nearby parking lot. PSPD learned that one of the subjects was attempting to manufacture Butane Honey Oil (BHO) inside of the room when the explosion occurred.
BHO is an extremely potent form of tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the chemical responsible for most of marijuana's psychological effects. The process of extracting THC from marijuana to manufacture BHO is a dangerous process. During this process, marijuana is tightly packed into an extraction device. During the different purification methods, butane, a flammable gas that is odorless, colorless, and heavier than air, can evaporate out of the substance and collect on the floor, accumulating to explosive levels without proper ventilation. It is believed that during this process, an explosion occurred within the room.
The four occupants of the room were an adult male, an adult female, and two teenage males. All four, who resided in Cathedral City, were taken to nearby hospitals. The two adults and one of the teenage males remain hospitalized in critical condition.
Due to the nature of the incident, specialized investigative personnel from the Coachella Valley Narcotics Task Force (CVNTF), Riverside County Sheriff's Department Special Investigations Bureau (SIB-East), CAL Fire Hazardous Materials Unit, and the Riverside County Department of Health responded to the location and assisted the Palm Springs Police and Fire Departments with the investigation.
The criminal investigation into this incident is ongoing and no other details can be released at this time. The names of the adult subjects involved in this incident will not be released at this time. The names of the juvenile subjects involved in this incident will not be released in accordance with the law."
