"Suspicious Death Determined to be Homicide; Suspect Arrested
On Saturday, February 21, 2015, at approximately 8:10 PM, PSPD received a report of an unresponsive female who was found in a desert lot, northwest of the intersection of East Mesquite Road and South Palm Canyon Drive. Officers arrived on scene and discovered the 48 year old female was deceased but the cause of death was unknown.
PSPD Detective Personnel responded to the area and began an extensive investigation into the death. During the death investigation, it was determined that the female victim, who was homeless, had been murdered in the desert area. PSPD Detectives were unable to locate any witnesses in the area during an investigation that carried on through out the night. On Sunday, February 22, 2015, at approximately 8:00 AM, PSPD Personnel were conducting further investigation in the area during daylight hours in an attempt to locate additional evidence. At approximately 11:45 AM, PSPD Personnel contacted Suspect-Verne Orlop, a homeless subject, in the area of their search. The subsequent investigation led up to the arrest of Orlop and into the recovery of evidence associated with the murder. Orlop was arrested without incident for murder and for violating the terms and conditions of his parole. Orlop was later transported to the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning. He is being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday, February 25, 2015. There are no additional suspects wanted at this time.
The name of the female victim will be released at a later time by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department Coroner's Bureau. PSPD will release additional information when it can be made available without jeopardizing the active homicide investigation.
