He has written today to the Bureau of Indian Affairs requesting permission to have the Magruder building demolished. He does not know how long it might take for them to decide nor what the chances are that they will say yes, but if the give permission the City will then go ahead an demolish the building at its own expenses.
ROCK GARDEN RESTAURANT BUILDING
He is in negotiation with the owners of the derelict Rock Garden restaurant about their demolition of that building. The owners, a consortium of Orange County developers who have already been discussing with PS Planning the possibility of building residential SFRs on the property, had told us over the phone that they intend to demolish the Rock Garden buildings but as yet, according to Dr. Ready, no permit for demolition has been applied for.
Dr. Ready agrees that applications to the Measure J Commission for improvements to the area, including costs associated with bringing unused property into temporary use, would be a good idea.
Where hotels on S. Palm Canyon Drive are on leased land with short remaining periods to run - in which cases one of the arguments is that the owners have no incentive to invest and improve them, despite there being incentives in waived TOT if they do so - the City can do nothing to ameliorate the situation. Where drug abuse occurs that is a matter for the PS PD to enforce.
